About the program

We aim to convey that the knowledge and tools for sustainable living, as well as the capacity to contribute to the well-being of our planet, are within everyone's reach. You don't need to possess expertise, formal environmental qualifications, or a scientific background to make a positive impact on our Earth.

We don't just offer volunteering opportunities. We empower you to make a difference and learning Spanish at the same time. Engage in hands-on volunteer projects, from community development to environmental conservation, and see the immediate impact of your efforts while improving your language skills.

Our Mission

This is a project and social action initiative in operation since 2022. The project admits up to a capacity of 10 volunteers at one time. There is mutual support between local social services and this project. We offer the opportunity for the poor and less fortunate to have access to fresh and organic foods that normal food banks seldom provide. The initiative seeks to reconnect volunteers with the environment and the earth by reclaiming lost values in modern society, like day-to-day work, patience, perseverance and care.

The Location
Our spots are where anybody can enjoy convenient access to fresh vegetable while walking, biking or driving throughout our City. We offer a warm, welcoming and fun community of people to learn and work with and a chance to live in an incredible and peaceful location in Northern Spain, waking up every morning to remarkable views, the sounds of birds and fresh food.

The Tasks

The produce varies by season or instance, however this aside the tasks are:

Digging ditches, seeding and planting, removing weeds, harmful insects and parasites.

Watering the field, preparing the soil, maintaining signage and creating wooden markers to indicate what is to be planted where.

Building “insect hotels”

Distributing foods and produce to soup kitchens and social services

Being a responsible individual and traveler is the first step in environmental volunteering. It involves considering your impact on the environment, including how you travel and the footprint you leave behind. Always approach your travels as opportunities for learning and enjoyment while maintaining utmost respect for nature and fellow travelers.

As a relatively new project with expansive plans and resources for growth, we welcome ideas and individuals with experience and expertise in this field. We have ample opportunities for you to contribute creatively to our new initiatives within our serene and picturesque environment.

Objectives

To promote teamwork, create a social awareness of the value of fresh, organic food products, as well as of the commitment involved in making sure the produce reach those most in need. It is important to reflect on the main value which arises in moments doing this work, when much of modern society values contemporary trends like technology and immediacy, this rising value being patience.

It is important to wear old, comfortable clothing that you are okay getting wet or stained, ideally hiking shoes or other appropriate footwear, to bring sun cream and raincoat/umbrella when necessary. Optionally work gloves as well, although we do provide our own. Previous experience is not required, but a good work ethic is invaluable.

Throughout your journey, you will have a dedicated mentor

About the project

Instituto Hemingway is a worker-run service cooperative that works the local network of NGOs, associations and social enterprises with international volunteers.

Meet your organization

Our vision is to promote international volunteerism, local associations and social enterprises by strategically matching international volunteer with local talents and creative thinking. Our goal is to function as a hub of innovative ideas and projects that can have a positive impact on Bilbao and the surrounding region. To that purpose we are constructing a community of social innovators - an international network that combines the energy and passion of volunteers from all over the world with the knowledge and skills of local NGOs, associations and social enterprises.

Volunteers work with the International Bilbao Network to support the causes of many Bilbao associations, NGOs, and public schools. Our local partners are committed to fostering social inclusion – in particular with regard to children at risk and migrants – as well as promoting local cultural heritage, English language,  animal care and environmental protection. The different organisations are committed to fostering social inclusion – in particular with regard to children at risk, migrants and homeless – as well as promoting local cultural heritage, English language, and environmental protection.

We are located in downtown Bilbao, just a few meters from  Gran Via in the historical centre. Instituto Hemingway is hosted in a 19th-century building across two floors and a rooftop terrace with a panoramic view.
