About the program

The project

As the name suggests, the Girls Education Program in Ghana is focused on providing help to young disadvantaged females living in urban village around Tamale. Volunteers work in a school whose main motto is to educate the girl child in the area.

These are girls from poor families living in the rural areas around Tamale, who barely manage to make their ends meet; let alone funding the education for their children. Being uneducated themselves, most of the parents don't believe in sending their girl child to school and rather keep them at home to help in domestic work. However, with years of efforts and awareness spread across these areas and families, these girls are now been allowed to go to schools and get proper education in order to make good out of their lives.

Volunteer work

Volunteers joining this program, will provide their support and contribute in imparting basic education to these girls at the local girl schools. Volunteers on this program will enjoy a rewarding experience by assisting the teachers to deliver lessons. During the mornings you’ll be working with smaller groups helping them with their reading, writing and numeracy skills. There may be occasions when you’ll be asked to teach one of the classes yourself but you’ll be fully supported if this happens.

Both male and female volunteers are eligible to take part in this program. The project is very much recommended for volunteers who are looking to make a difference by working at the grass roots level along with the Ghanaian community.

Volunteering for girl education in Ghana requires volunteers to involve themselves in a number of activities, at the school, on a regular basis. This may include, but may not be limited to;

  • Assisting the teachers to deliver lessons.
  • Work with smaller groups helping them with their reading, writing and numeracy skills.
  • Teach one of the classes yourself but you’ll be fully supported if this happens.
  • Design a proper study module for the children to follow.
  • Involve students in out–of–the–class activities to teach them the importance of physical activity

Volunteers working in this program need not be qualified or trained teachers. The project is suitable for individuals who want to volunteer teaching on their gap year, holiday , summer placement or career break.

The school

Please remember that these are schools setup in village areas and are not very big in area or number of students. One must not expect a high level of facilities available in the school and must make the best utilization of whatever facilities and materials available. There are 4-5 classrooms with each having a strength of 15-20 girls. in a school whose main motto is to educate the girl child in the area.
