About the program

The farming project is a project that was launched in cooperation with the organisation H.O.P.E for Tomorrow Inc. For the farming project, we support a primary school in Adenkrebi by providing a nutritious lunch to aid in food security and combat malnutrition. At the beginning of the project, the school is supported financially by us to provide a nutritious meal for the students.

We are in the process of developing our school garden to provide direct access to vegetables and fruits for school lunch  The farm also includes a poultry section. Furthermore, our goal is to generate income from the garden. The funding will be slowly withdrawn until the school becomes self-sufficient.

Our team and an extension officer from the community assists the school with the garden. The biology teacher, who also teaches agriculture as part of the curriculum, will assists our team and help to integrate the school garden into the lessons, so that the theoretical knowledge can be experienced in practice. The children have the opportunity to observe the garden as part of an extracurricular activity.  We are further currently developing a nutrition program in conjunction with the lunch initiative and school garden to provide education to students to reduce malnutrition among the youth.

Furthermore, AFAWI, H.O.P.E for Tomorrow Inc. will perform training on the topics of nutrition and health and provide assistance to students impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Community

Adenkrebi is a very small community, so we rely on the help of the community to carry out this project. A member of the community has provided the land on which the school garden will be built. Furthermore, the community provides us with an extension officer who manages the garden and carries out the work there. The caterer who prepares nutritious meals for the school is also a member of the community.

Students

The aim of this project is not only to provide the students with a nutritious meal but also to educate them about nutrition and health. The students can visit the school garden several times and to experience what they have learned in the agricultural lessons. The students are also given some responsibility because it is their garden, and they have to oversee it. The students are not expected to work on the farm, but to acquire various soft skills through monitoring, controlling, and researching.

Our organization welcomes volunteer interns from all around the world. As a grassroots organization, we foster a knowledge- sharing environment that promotes an experience to learn about international development, Ghanaian culture, and our specific projects that empower women and children to create a better future for our communities.  This includes the following tasks:

  • Support with the planning, implementation, and coordination processes of the projects.
  • Support with the conceptual elaboration and management of the projects.
  • Support with the preparation of needs analyses based on work documentation and on-site evaluation visits
  • Support with the communication, cooperation, and establishment of new cooperations with local and international partner organizations
  • Data collection and evaluation
  • Background research
  • Preparation of academic publications
  • Fundraising Proposal writing
  • Internal trainings

The workload and tasks will differ according to the professional and academic background of each individual as well as the performance on site. Kindly further note that our projects run in phases, this means the individual work of each volunteer might vary according to the time and duration of the internship.

Typical day

A working day (Mo-Thu) typically starts for our volunteers at 9:00 am at the office.

As the accommodation for our volunteers is located in the same building as our office space, the way to the work is often very short.

Depending on the daily task, the volunteers will either work in the office on planning the next project phase, or help in other daily tasks, such as report writing, data evaluation and all other aspects of working tasks of an NGO.

On other days, the volunteers will go out in the rural areas for the field work, accompanied by our staff. In this project this means helping with the farm work or visit the farm and the school for monitoring and evaluation purposes as well as hosting of workshops.

The daily working routine is thereby very diverse as we are always trying to give our volunteers an overall insight into the work of a NGO.

We normally have a lunch break together on working days if possible and the day officially ends for our volunteers at 4pm. After that, the volunteers have time to explore the city on their own or take part in our activities  (such as language and cooking classes, games night etc.).
