About the program

The program

This teaching program is running in governmental primary schools or in private schools in rural areas. The English teaching instructor will work in schools and organize various activities for the children to increase the sharpness of their talents and to increase their knowledge about English language, grammar and spelling.

Volunteering as an English teaching instructor in India is an ideal way to help redress the imbalance of knowledge in India. You can gain invaluable international development work experience without any previous skills and you do not need any training or certification.

Whether you are volunteering in India during your gap year, a career break or an extended vacation, you will have a role to play on one of our English teaching program so that you will be able to make a difference. Students and individuals as well as groups are invited to join this program.

Volunteers can join our programs for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks.

Clothing

India is a very diverse country with cultural and weather fluctuations. It is good to wear decent and comfortable clothes. It not only protects from the extremes of weather, but also protects you from mosquitoes. It is also suggested for the volunteers (especially for female volunteers) not to wear exposing clothes, as it is not preferred in Indian culture.

While going to project sites it is highly recommended that all our participants wear long trousers or pants and round neck t-shirts or shirts, which will help you gain lots of respect in the communities we work in. We also arranged Indian traditional clothes for our female volunteers (salwar kameez) that will cost extra small charges.

What you should pack

Bring clothes, sleeping bags and sleeping sheets according to the local weather conditions of the project area. Furthermore you will need sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a headlight or a torch, a water bottle, a raincoat or an umbrella for the monsoon season, which is from late July to early September. The cold season is from late October to early March and the summer season is from early April to late June.

We do not provide any toiletries or towels, hence bring some along with your clothes. In case of extra requirements, they can be purchased from nearby markets.

Visa

In order to work as an English language instructor, we strongly recommend a tourist visa, which can be obtained by post from the Indian Embassy/ Indian High Commission in your home country.

Security and health

The volunteers’ security is our first priority! All the volunteer placements sites are perfectly safe. The volunteer house in situated in a safe neighbourhood and comes with a security (night) guard.

First-aid is available in the volunteer house, however any specific medication should be brought along with proper prescription.

Although it can be terrifying to go to a place by yourself, I felt safe with Mohinder and Avneesh after the first day!
