About the program

Teaching Buddhist monks in Nepal is one of the wonderful opportunity. You will have to opportunity to learn their culture and lifestyle. Most of them are Tibetan monasteries opened by Tibetan refugees that fled the Chinese occupation. These monasteries house hundred of monks enrolled in the life of a monkhood from early in their lives. They study and live in the monastery. They mostly use Tibetan language only during their study and their chances of learning English are very limited.

The tremendous Buddhist presence has lead to Buddhist monastery being established in all region of Nepal. Many of these historically significant monasteries are open to the public and located within the Kathmandu valley and surrounding area. In this project you will be educating or caring Buddhist monks in the age range of approximately 5-16 years old. In the monastery at any given time there around 30 to 40 monks, of which there will be 2 classes, one for seniors and one for junior students. A unique opportunities of this placement is the volunteer will have a rare opportunities to witness and participate in traditional Buddhist rituals.

Recently, the Rinpoche or the high lama of the monastery have realized that the monks need to learn English if they are to spread the teaching of Buddhist and communicate effectively with outside people. Hence the monasteries are looking for volunteers to teach English to Buddhist monks. Teaching English to Buddhist monks is an excellent opportunity for volunteers who are interested in Buddhism and culture. In the monastery, volunteers will also have  wonderful opportunity to learn Vajrayana from of Buddhism and witness colorful rituals and prayers.


Your responsibilities as a Volunteer:- Volunteers will primarily work as English instructors either in the schools of the Tibetan children’s village or children home. The monastery are usually very spacious they have several ceremony around the year however if they have ceremony or puja going on in the monastery volunteer should not to expect teaching class and we heartily to tell the volunteer to respect their culture However during the ceremony you will also help to them for in the kitchen or any rituals activities. A central building will house prayer room and the main altar. There will be other building for accommodation, eating and staying. During the teaching you will be encouraged to converse with monks to improve their speech you can talk about things back home and ask them about their childhood and life as monks


Note: Monastery have a lot of ceremony in the year and there will not be the teaching class which volunteers can not expect teach to children however you can still play with children (Monks) and help in the ceremony in any circumstances. However in the ceremony Monastery can still open for volunteer and tourist to stay in the Monastery. You can find the ceremony or vacation or examination where the Monastery listed

October : Mid Exam and National holidays (daishain festival 20 days holidays )

November: Tihar Festival (5 days holidays)

December: Christmas and English New year eve

January: English New year, Makar sakranti 

February: Basantapanchami 

March: Final Exam 

April: Final Exam 

April: 14th April (Nepali New year celebration)

May: Buddha jayanti (Big Celebration in the Monastery ) Ceremony for few days depending on the Monastery who big they doing celebration. 

July: 1st term exam 



Typical day

You will have  a wonderful day everyday you will have to join praying at 5:00 am. This is the optional if you join at 5:00 am in the morning but your break fast accord at7:00am with tea and biscuits after that you will have teaching class inside the monastery. Again there is lunch time at 12:00 ...

You will have  a wonderful day everyday you will have to join praying at 5:00 am. This is the optional if you join at 5:00 am in the morning but your break fast accord at7:00am with tea and biscuits after that you will have teaching class inside the monastery. Again there is lunch time at 12:00 noon. after the lunched you have few hour free time. 1:00pm to 4:00 pm is regular teaching class. At 5:00 pm The another chanting time everyday you will have to join them for an hour 7:00 pm and then dinner. And the following day is the same thing you can do at the monastery.


Teaching English, is the main way you will help but there may also be the chance to teach Math's and Science Teaching is not only your responsibilities you can also take care and health sanitation to children. You can expect to teach around 3 to 4 hours a day – however some days may be busier than others. There will be flexible curriculum syllabus in Nepal when conducting your lessons. There is usually a government course guide book available according to class standards that focuses on Math's, English and Science.

You will have a lot of free time, The monastery are usually very spacious they have several ceremony around the year however if they have ceremony or puja going on in the monastery volunteer should not to expect teaching class and we heartily to tell the volunteer to respect their culture However during the ceremony you will also help to them for in the kitchen or any rituals activities. Which you can spend travelling, relaxing or learning about the Buddhist way of life. You will find the monks to be accepting and genuinely grateful for your help. You will get the chance to eat with the monks and have the opportunity too take part in some meditation rituals if you are up early enough to learn this practice too!


Free-time activities

You will have many way to donate your time in Nepal. There is historical places to visit, such as: Bouddhanath, Durbar squires, Hindu temples, Swyambhu Nath ( monkey temple) to explore the city's. Hiking and trekking, wildlife safari, rafting and many more thing to do while your free time.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Airport Pickup at Tribhuvan International Airport

We will well organize airport pick up by personal car either comfortable transportation to our hostel. On receipt of your flight details, NVDP will organize an airport pick up and drop off to your accommodation in Kathmandu (this will not exceed 2 nights). This is covered by your program fee and as such there will be no charge and we will endeavor to be on time. We cannot be held accountable for problems such as traffic jams but we will do our best to meet you punctually. Also please note that we are not allowed into the Arrivals Hall of the airport so we will meet you just outside the main EXIT Hall with a name plate with NVDP logo. The area is not big and it should be easy to find each other. Please note that any offers to carry your luggage will come from outside parties (not NVDP staff) so if you are approached and accept, you will be expected to pay a tip. We strongly advise not to accept those services as it encourages begging. Should you leave the country immediately after the volunteering / internship, NVDP staff can drop you at the airport.

Accommodation

Volunteers will live at the Monastery in separate volunteer living quarters. Accommodation is basic but comfortable. The rural located project accommodation are more simple and without the western style toilets, not hot showers we request to volunteer can not expect the luxury accommodation in rural project. The Accommodation in urban is more Modern. 


Accommodation in Nepal is comfy but generally very basic. Particularly in rural locations most accommodation will have western style toilets however some options only have Indian style squat toilets so be prepared.

Food & Beverages

We only provide food when they are in the monastery. Three meal of day with tea and coffee. We do not provide hard drink and no allowed to hard drink at the monastery. Food is very simple and extremely delicious. Food during your placement is included in the program fee. You should receive two to three meals a day throughout the placement, which will be of a Nepali standard, usually Daal–Bhat (lentil soup – rice), vegetable curry, pickle etc. If you wish to supplement your diet with other food, these expenses are yours. We will only cover food and accommodation for the period agreed for your placement and only at your placement.

If you go trekking or wish to stay in Nepal after your agreed period of placement, you will be responsible for your own expenses. If you decide to go away during your placement we cannot refund you any money and you do this at your own cost. In most cases you will be staying with a host family after the program orientation and will share the same food with them. Should you have any dietary conditions, you should let us know before your arrival in Nepal. Should you wish to return to the city at the weekends, you must cover your food and accommodation costs yourself. In case you want to make any trips during your placement, the period is still counted within regular placement time and that time won’t be extended to your date.

Details on arrival

It is very flexible volunteer can start anytime or any date this program in Nepal but volunteer need to  inform us before 4 weeks that we need arrange living arrangement in the monastery. You should arrive into Tribhuvan international airport in Kathmandu. You will be met at the airport by one of our airport representative who will be holding a named sign. They will take you to your accommodation where you will spend the rest of your day at leisure.

NVDP-Nepal is a not for Profit, non-religious, non- political, non -Governmental volunteer organization which offers a varity of community based volunteering placements.
