About the program

You have the opportunity to make a difference in South Africa by volunteering as a teacher in disadvantaged areas and preparing children for their future. You'll also get to see the country up close and visit some interesting people. 1 million South African households are illiterate, and lack of libraries, computer equipment, toilet facilities, and extra teachers contribute to an overburdened system. To make a difference, volunteers provide attention to slow learners and those with difficulties, but mostly they provide young people with interest whenever they require it. This program allows you to make a difference in a local community.

Characteristics of educational institutions where volunteers assist

  • The projects are all based at public primary and high schools and located in disadvantaged communities in and around Cape Town.
  • Classes range from 40 to 50 learners per class. In some instances, the classes are even larger
  • Facilities and resources are often very limited
  • Schools rely on public funds, fundraising initiatives, donations and support from local community members
  • Schools are run by governing board members which are representatives of parents
  • Some schools run food programs.
  • Most do not have active sports activities or library services and need help in these areas.
  • Special needs classes or help with homework is often lacking
  • Children in the project range from 03-12 years of age.

About the project

Integrated Learning Experiences was founded in 2005 by former Peace Corps staff that wanted to provide flexible volunteer programs with a positive impact.

Meet your organization

Integrated Learning Experiences’ (INLEX) mission is to strengthen human resources in Central America and South America through volunteer programs, educational travel and internship opportunities.

In addition to this, INLEX provides opportunities for students and professionals to further gain experience in their field of choice by matching participants with the best opening available.

We work towards:

  • Sustainability in the projects and communities that we work in.
  • Programs that promote cultural exchange.
  • Safe and affordable programs.
  • Strengthening and empowering communities.
  • Authentic experiences for our participants.
  • Facilitating education.

INLEX was set founded by former Peace Corps staff in Guatemala in 2005 who wanted to provide flexible programs for volunteers in Central America. This flexibility allows our participants the option to commit for as long as they want in the area they are best suited to support; creating a positive impact and a rewarding experience. We do this because we believe in the principle that every volunteer can make a difference.

Many years and happy people later, we continue working with key partner projects to develop communities in the Latin American region.
