About the program

The project

As the name suggests, this project is based on the lines of public awareness and includes a feeding program for malnourished children. This is a very unique and a one-of-its-kind program where in volunteers can contribute for the welfare and development of an entire community as a whole.

Philippines has had a history of encountering natural disasters on a trot; such as typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc. This has increased the risk of malnutrition; especially, among infants. The project mainly focus on the areas of food habits, hygiene, nutritional intake, baby feeding, and matters related to healthy diet. The main aim is to rectify and improve the malnourished condition of infants, especially, those born in low-income communities.

Volunteer work

Under this project, volunteers have to organize seminars and workshops for the local and the rural communities and enlighten them about the benefits of a balanced diet and maintaining nutritional plans. Through these information rich workshops, volunteers have to convince the parents to create a food habit that is rich in vital nutrients and nourishing for the kids. These learning have to be imparted keeping in view that the locals do not compromise on their personal savings. The goals of the project are two-fold.

  • The first is to provide a stable supplementary feeding program for malnourished infants for pre-school children aged 3 to 6 years old.
  • The second is to disseminate information to parents about the importance of healthy nutrition through a series of workshops and seminars.
Whilst no specialist skills are required to participate on this project; those with backgrounds in Nutrition Public Health are strongly encouraged to apply for the volunteering in Public Health program. Below is a list of tasks to be done by volunteers under this project;

  • Preparing supplementary feeding
  • Recording and analysing the status of children on the project
  • Enlighten the people in the community about the benefits of a balanced diet and maintaining nutritional plans.
  • Organize seminars and workshops for the local and the rural communities.
  • Convince the parents to create a food habit that is rich in vital nutrients and nourishing for the kids.
The project is available all year round and is available for a minimum program duration of 2 weeks. Participants who have a basic knowledge of public health nutrition are preferred. Those participants who are studying Public health nutrition courses are also encouraged to apply.

Airport Pickup at D. Z. Romualdez Airport

Volunteers are picked up from, and dropped off at, Tacloban Airport by a local representative staff member. Volunteers need to arrive one day prior to the program start date.

Accommodation

Volunteers will live with homestay families residing in Tacloban area. The homestays have been thoroughly evaluated before they were accepted into our homestay program and are experienced in accommodating international volunteers. Prior to your arrival, you will receive a profile outlining the specifics of your homestay family.

Your homestay will welcome you into their home and treat you as member of the family. By living with them, you will be able to experience the Filipino culture and participate in their daily activities. You will eat the same food they are eating, though your homestay family knows what foreigners like to eat. If you have special dietary requirements, it is best to inform us beforehand so we can meet your needs. You will be served only two meals per day, breakfast and dinner. Your homestay will also provide you with filtered drinking water, as it is best not to drink tap water. All the homestays have electricity and running water. You will have a private room by yourself or shared with a fellow volunteer. You also be provided a mosquito net and electric fan. The bathroom or toilet, commonly called “comfort room or CR” will be shared will all the family members.

Bathroom accommodation is basic and the volunteer will take cold, bucket baths because hot running showers are uncommon in Filipino homes – don't worry too much about this as cold bucket baths are often refreshing after being in the tropical heat all day.

Food & Beverages

During your time as a volunteer, you will be provided with two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) by your homestay. Aside from this, access to safe drinking water will also be provided by your homestay. All meals will be served with rice and typically include fish, chicken or pork. Homestays can cater for special dietary restrictions, however we require that you include this in the application form.

As an organization, we have a cross-cultural set up in all our offices across the world. We have people from different countries, cultures and ethnicities working for us in order to make the process of volunteer traveling smoother and more flexible.

We have dedicated coordinators at each volunteer destination, coming from different countries. We take care of the volunteer’s placement, traveling, accommodation, meals and security.

What we do?

Currently, Volunteering Solutions operates in more than 25 countries, providing more than 100 volunteering and interning options ranging from Child Care, Teaching, Medical and Healthcare, Community Development, Marine Conservation and much more. Most of our volunteers are high school students, couples, corporate groups and individuals on their summer break or gap year.

We are in collaboration with NGOs, schools, hospitals, orphanages, HIV/AIDS clinics, women groups and other social welfare organizations all across the globe. Each of these organizations have been working at the grassroot level for years, and successfully contributed towards the development of the concerned people. VolSol has ensured that the contribution of every volunteer is counted, and there’s sustainable growth.

Our mission/vision

Our mission is to offer the most comprehensive volunteer abroad experience to travelers from all walks of life, with a vision to promote ethical and sustainable travelling. We aim to make a difference in the lives of the unprivileged people in different parts of the world and to bridge the gap between the volunteers and the host communities to establish a 'Win-Win' situation for both.

Who are we looking for?

Travelers who are flexible in their approach, dedicated to provide their time and effort, and determined to make a difference in the society. Our volunteers come from all walks of life; be it a high school student or a retired professor. Any and everyone can join our projects, as long as they have the determination to be the part of volunteering brigade. The minimum age requirement to join our programs is 17 years, while, there's no maximum age limit. One need not have any particular degree or qualification to join our programs, and all we look for is the dedication and flexibility in the volunteer.

Please Note: For our medical programs, volunteers need to be pre-med/medical/or certified doctors.

Why choose us?

Not only our placements are the safest, but also are one of the most affordable all over the world. Our credibility reflects from not only as a registered member of WYSE Travel Confederation, but also from the 11k+ satisfied volunteers whom we have placed in the last over a decade of our operations.

For the internship programs, participants opting for Medical and Healthcare projects get to work with professionals and learn how to deal in emergency situations. Our internship programs are crafted and designed in a way that every participant gets to know about the medical scenario of the particular country. It is both an inward and outward journey - inward, as you’ll get to learn a lot through first hand experience, and outward, as the society will be benefitted by your contribution.
