Om programmet

Tourism in Peru is booming but the benefits for host communities are sometimes hard to see. So, we’re going on an adventure outside the big box of mass tourism to see how young Peruvians are creating their own alternatives and making change for their communities. From the beaches outside one of the world’s most visited cities to the jungles of the upper Amazon and back to the river oasis of Lunahuana, we’ll get to know surfers, artisans, and acrobats. We’ll learn to ride the waves of change, juggle community development, and dig into permaculture. We’ll examine Peru’s history and see how it’s led to a diverse landscape where, at the edges of conventional tourism, a new generation of Peruvians are leading a rise in alternative tourism and social action.

Our volunteer programs take a learning-first approach. We combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers can explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions. Here is one community partners we work with on this program:

Ecoaldeas Peru is a social enterprise aimed at rural sustainable development. The organization works to empower local grassroots organizations of farmers, women, youth, and native indigenous communities, partnering with local government, private and public institutions. Their goal is to improve rural educational levels, to empower environmentally-friendly practices in small-holder agriculture, and to develop eco-techniques required for a better quality of life.

Typisk dag

* This is a preliminary itinerary. The final itinerary may change a little based on the needs of our partners and new opportunities which present themselves. This should give you a really good idea of what the program will look and feel like.

Day 1-2: Arrivals & Orientation in Lima

Welcome to Peru! We'll begin our adventure with a little orientation in the centre of the famous city of Lima. We'll get an intro to the local culture with group Spanish lessons and Peruvian cooking classes at Peruwayna!

Next, we'll stretch our legs with a unique tour of Lima's famous and not-so-famous landmarks. From "El Malecon" to Barranco's old town, get ready to see Peru's vibrant capital in a whole new light before joining with some friends and journeying downtown to learn about one of the darker periods in the country's history at the LUM. If we're lucky, we'll celebrate the day with a sunset looking out over the city.

Day 3: Transforming Tourism in Lurin

After a little bit of shopping in one of Lima's biggest markets, we'll head off to nearby Lurin to meet Ichimay Wari. Here, on the outskirts of Lima, a group of refugees who escaped the terror of the Shining Path have found safe haven and are now developing a unique model of cultural and craft-based tourism. There's simply no better place to talk about social enterprise and the rise of alternative tourism!

Day 4: Ride the Waves of Change in Lima

After getting our feet firmly planted on the ground and our bodies orientated in Lima, we'll head down to the beach and meet Alto Peru, an inspiring organization of youth who are doing things just a little differently! These young folks are harnessing the power of sport to provide opportunities to local Peruvians. They'll teach us to surf and show us how tourism and community-based development can go hand-in-hand.

Day 5-6: Juggling Community in Ventanilla

Our next stop is Pachacutec! Tourism rarely reaches this far-flung barrio of Ventanilla, but after only a short journey north from Lima, our group will be greeted by the awesome Asociacion Casa Juvenil Pachacutec (ACJP). This incredible group of creative youth express themselves through dance and acrobatics, using their talents to empower and promote positive change in their community. For two days, we'll camp and collaborate with ACJP, assisting in the delivery of workshops, playing reflective games, and hitting the beach for a bonfire.

Day 7-11: Amazon Adventures in San Roque de Cumbaza

After saying goodbye to our new friends on the coast, we'll take an incredibly long (but rewarding!) journey from the coast, over the Andes, and into the Amazon! Our 32-hour bus ride follow the winding road to Tarapoto, where we'll meet and work alongside Ecoaldeas in their mission to support more environmentally and socially sustainable initiatives in rural Amazonia.

We'll settle into our jungle lodge in the community of San Roque de Cumbaza for a few days of hands-on learning. We'll explore medicinal plants, grow some coffee, make some compost and help build infrastructure alongside local staff and community members. Then, we'll lace up our boots and hit the trail on a 3-day trek with Ecoaldeas. Get ready to see all the unique flora and fauna of the upper amazon! It's a challenging hike but we'll be well rewarded with incredible views and delicious food in the good company of our amazing guides. And of course, be prepared for late night sing-alongs and storytelling!

Day 12-14: Disorientation and Departures

After a quick flight back to the coast, we'll conclude our adventure in the town of Lunahuana on the shores of the Canete River. Here, tourism is a way of life, so we'll get our adrenaline pumpin' and white-water raft down some Class IIIs and IVs before slowing down to reflect on our incredible journey. We'll fill our bellies, tell stories, stare at the stars, and think about everything we've learned. Then it's back to Lima for a hug-filled farewell!

Om prosjektet

We go backpacking with a purpose! Our programs combine cross-cultural dialogue, critical learning, community service, and of course, travel and adventure!

Møt din vert

Is voluntourism helping or hurting what people called ‘the developing world’? Is there a way for visitors to positively contribute to local initiatives while also thinking critically about international development? What’s the best ice cream flavour, really?

In 2006, we boarded a flight to Accra, Ghana seeking answers to these questions and so many more. When we touched down, we were hit with a barrage of sights, sounds, and smells that shattered our preconceived notions of the ‘global south’. Rather than stumbling into a crumbling landscape, we were greeted by a beautiful, bustling city, rich with culture and brimming with innovation.

At the same time, we could see some of the challenges local communities were grappling with. Why does poverty continue to plague so much of the world while billionaires multiply and millions pour into international development projects that don’t seem to make a difference? We heard that governments, charities, and international organizations often pushed their own agendas without consulting the communities they said they were ‘helping.’

We learned that projects were much more likely to succeed if they were carried out in collaboration with the community. Not as a handout, not as charity – but in solidarity.

We started talking to local NGOs and community leaders about what their real needs were. We cultivated relationships with grassroots organizations, community leaders, and local governments. We began to build a program that wouldn’t just plop a volunteer into a project they knew little about. Instead, we would take a learning-first approach. We would combine an educational program with collaborative community service so that travellers could explore the local history, context, and challenges while contributing to local solutions.

Since that first pilot program in West Africa, OG has run hundreds of programs in more than 20 countries around the world. With all of this experience, we have expertly designed programs that navigate the inherent risks that come with embarking on such an awesome adventure. We bring cool, caring people together who want to explore the world while actively learning to change it for the better. We’re sparking a movement of globally active and socially conscious travellers.

Accessible, responsible and immersive travel is our mission. Go to our website to learn about our financial support options including our Financial Needs Grants that can cover up to 25% of your program fee.

2019 at Seed to Shelf

As a fairly experienced traveller before my program with OG, I was worried that I wouldn't get a lot out of the program. I was worried I'd resent the group dynamic, that I wouldn't learn much, and that the promises of real and intimate connections with locals simply couldn't be achieved in this ...
