About the Program

While most children in Ghana do attend school, the standard of education can be fairly low, and schools are often under-resourced and overcrowded. Through this program, volunteers will contribute towards developing these schools in a sustainable way by assisting in the classroom, planning and delivering extra-curricular classes, and by working in resource and staff development. Key focus areas for this program include planning preventative health workshops, teaching English language, music arts and crafts, and delivering creative and structured play activities for Creche, Preschool and young students. You may also have the opportunity to assist in the classroom with curriculum subjects such as Maths, Science or Literature, for primary and high school-aged children.

From Monday to Friday, you’ll be planning, designing and delivering educational classroom sessions and extra-curricular activities for students from under-resourced local schools. In doing so, you’ll be helping to provide local schools with the capacity they need to ensure all students benefit from both creative and core-curriculum based lessons and you will be involved in activities that promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) including Goal 4: Quality Education.

From helping to improve the school environment, assisting in the training of local teachers, to organizing classes, educational games and activities with the students, there is always plenty of valuable work to be done across OGVO’s many local partner schools. So as a participant you’ll work with OGVO’s skilled field team to identify areas where you can be particularly effective and where your help is needed the most at that time by the local community.

Location

Ghana is a peaceful and welcoming country; Ghana satisfies one's appetite for both modern and traditional life. Its wide valleys, low-lying coastal plains, and thick rainforests resound with the beat of traditional rituals, while her cities glow and vibrate with all the bustle of the modern world. The Ghanaians are the friendliest people in West Africa: warm, proud yet humble with a contagious and calming sense of funniness.

Ghana is hot. It is always hot. What’s more, it's always humid. Humidity usually lingers between 95 and 100 percent. The rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-November - sometimes. The rain provides a little respite from the intense heat, but temperatures will still be in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. The south of the country experiences the heaviest rainfall during September.

Wake up in your host family’s house every morning, get dressed, and have breakfast in the kitchen area. Eat a plate of breads and spreads before grabbing your packed lunch and heading out the door. Jump into a tro-tro or shared taxi and make your way to the school. On your first day, OGVO staff will accompany you to show you the way.

A typical day starts at 8am and finishes between 2-4pm, with a half hour break around 10am and an hour lunch break at 12pm. You’ll work Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to explore and relax.

Your day will be varied with regards to the subjects you teach. One day you may start with English and French classes, and others you will be teaching IT and Mathematics. You’ll assist the teachers with extracurricular lessons in the afternoons. Every lessons is between 30 minutes to an hour long, with some lessons being double periods.

When you’re not teaching, you’ll have free time to prepare lessons for the next day. The teachers will be happy to help you plan lessons, although your own new ideas will be welcomed.

Once you are done for the day, head home or grab a traditional Ghanaian meal from a restaurant or food stall with the other volunteers. You also have plenty of free time on the weekends, so organize a trip with other volunteers, or just relax and explore on your own.

The Our Generation Voluntary Organization (OGVO) was founded in 2004 in order to enable young people to use their leisure time for international volunteering, interns, cultural exchange programs etc. in Ghana. Our Generation Voluntary Organization is a non-profit and non-governmental African Organisation. Our volunteer programs/projects are suitable for anyone on a Gap Year, Career Break or for anyone looking to do a short term volunteer program.

Our Generation Voluntary Organisation provides safe, unique, flexible, meaningful and extremely affordable volunteer programs and non-paid internships work-experience in Ghana. We have a variety of programs on offer at affordable prices. Our projects are designed to cater to the needs of people from all backgrounds.

Since its inception in 2004, OGVO has delivered great experiences to thousands of volunteers across the ten regions of Ghana. Our Medical and Healthcare internships are much admired amongst the medical students, and this is where medics get hands-on knowledge into complex medical procedures. Be it for college credits or an internship or volunteer certificate or even a service learning trip - schoolies, gapers and numerous high school students enroll for our programs throughout the year.

Our Generation Voluntary Organisation's volunteer and intern programs are available in both urban and rural areas. OGVO has flexible start dates and durations that runs from 1 week to 6 months depending on the program of your choice. Extensions can be arranged with advanced notice. You can arrive any day of the year with advanced notice as well. During this time, you will be staying in the home of a local Ghanaian family. Our host families are carefully screened, socially respected and experienced with hosting international volunteers.  Accommodation is simple but clean and includes 3 meals a day of local cuisine. Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the host family and have lunch at their project.

OGVO believes that home stays offer you the best experience during your time in Ghana by allowing you to save money, while providing you with an easy way to integrate into Ghanaian culture. In most cases, you will share a room with volunteers (of same gender). Your weekends are free to explore some of the amazing sights that Ghana has to offer. Volunteers regularly travel together and our team will help you plan weekend trips. Our staff visits volunteers regularly and always happy to help our volunteers in any way needed.

At Our Generation Voluntary Organisation  our programs are designed to help the local communities at the same time of providing a valuable learning and cultural experience to our volunteers and interns. We invite you to volunteer or intern in Ghana with us, and have the experience of your lifetime!

As a volunteer or intern in Ghana you will have the opportunity to work in number of different capacities including Teaching English & other subjects to kids, Medical & healthcare internships, Dental electives,Veterinary, and many more!

2018 at Be a Teaching Assistant / Childcare Volunteer

I went as an “English Class Teaching Volunteer” to Ghana. When I arrived at the airport, I was really nervous. I have never travelled to the African continent before. But everything went well and it was easy to find Frank who picked me up at the airport. Unfortunately, we needed about 7 hours to ...
Ghana has been quite an experience for me. I have learned a lot about the African culture and can now spread my experiences with other people I know. The trip did not start like we expected when my luggage was lost, but once I reached my host site and my family everything was better. I first ...
Without a doubt, this will be an experience that you will not forget. I volunteered at Adehyee school in a small town 30 minutes from Kumasi. The town did not have much, but it was great getting a real life experience of people that live in Ghana. If you want a real experience, I would suggest going ...
