Problem:
Illegal wildlife trading is a big problem in Peru. The country is extremely biologically diverse, but its enforcement of wildlife trading laws is unfortunately weak, creating the perfect market for traffickers. Rare, endangered and native animal species are regularly smuggled out of the Amazon rainforest and sold: Capuchin, spider and howler monkeys, parrots, tapirs, sloths, armadillos, caimans, boas, anacondas and turtles. During this traumatic experience, the animals are locked in extremely small cages, fed badly and kept close to other species creating stress and allowing the spread of diseases.

Solution:
An indigenous Harakmbut family runs a rescue and rehabilitation center within the biosphere of Manu National Park, declared a world heritage culture site by UNESCO in 1978. They provide shelter, food and care for animals affected by wildlife traffic in their natural environment. They receive veterinary care and are rehabilitated to be then released back into the wild if they are strong enough to survive. This project has no public funding to support it, so they urgently request international assistance in the form of volunteers.

Come and join us to:

  • Find and rescue animals that were illegally smuggled out of their natural habitat.
  • Care for medically, feed and shelter these animals for as long as they need.
  • Rehabilitate and reintroduce the animals back into the wild.
  • Teach the local community and visitors to the reserve about the dangers of illegal wildlife trafficking, the animals, and their wonderful natural environment.
  • Create a bond between the environment and the community.
  • Create a sustainable operations procedure to keep this reserve running.
  • Learn about and protect some of the most unique and exceptional wildlife in the world.
  • Learn from other cultures and people like the Harakmbut.
  • And learn and practice your Spanish.

Our Organization

We work as international logistics, communications and service provider for humanitarian aid projects by supporting local, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profit organizations (NPOs) and private development aid initiatives. All organizations we work with, are vetted to ensure they have high levels of accountability and transparency.

Our Commitment

We provide a platform through which organizations in Latin America can find the resources they need to achieve their goals, including people placement, technology and capacity building. This includes skilled manpower, relief items, construction materials, administrative, educational, environmental and medical support. Our commitment is to be an online advocate and agent of change.

Our Approach

NGO Taxi identifies projects in need. When a project has been approved to be accountable we send volunteers to support and work together with communities and supporters to identify issues and design sustainable solutions (e.g. micro finance initiatives). From beginning to end the entire life cycles of our projects – the identification process, the evaluation process and the monitoring of project locations and development aid initiatives – are documented.

The Animal Shelter project in Peru with Caesar as project leader was great. Caesar is friendly, funny, always cheerful, open-hearted, straightforward, and a bit roguish; his girlfriend Viktoria is also friendly, nice, helpful, and a very good cook; and the project itself with the animals is great ...

I have been volunteering with NGO Taxi for 6 weeks. First, I took 1 week of Spanish lessons, then I went hiking to Machu Picchu for almost 1 week, and worked the rest of the time in the animal shelter in the jungle.
