Sobre el programa

Challenges facing the agriculture industry of Tanzania include climate change, an increase in population, and the resulting droughts, floods, agriculture temperature shocks, as well as a lack of agricultural technology. These pose severe challenges to the living standards of most people involved in the agriculture industry in Tanzania and create huge increases in unemployment, hunger, malnutrition, starvation, and disease rates.

The project was initiated in 1997 by Dr. Everest Maguo and his wife, Evelyn Maguo, who have experience in agriculture, environmental services, and veterinary services. It was established with the aim of empowering farmers with new skills, technologies, and advice on animal care, environmental issues, and agricultural matters.

The Project:

The volunteer activities start from 9 a.m. to the afternoon, from Monday to Friday. Sometimes you will be invited to work on Saturday for your own choice.

The project activities are mobile, such as visiting farmers and schools for education and advice. Other activities will be stationed at Sekei main office, where you will be working in the small garden, which has vegetables and fruit trees or walk and care for their dogs. You will become a full member of the team, enriching their knowledge with yours and exchanging a lot of ideas.

Lunch is not provided.

IMPORTANT

You do not need any previous knowledge, but a strong belief of the importance of agriculture, environmental conservation and a love to communicate with people about that topic should be a given part of you. Please note: in order to implement the project and buy trees, a one-time donation of 100 USD is required for agriculture equipment and transport.

Your Work - “a typical day”:

The Volunteer's House is located in the Sakina neighborhood of Arusha. From there, you will start your daily travels by taking public transportation and walking to Sekei. Some days the director will pick you up on the street near the volunteer house. At the site, you will meet with your director at the program's head office to discuss the day and what you will do. Your role within the project will be discussed on your first day and depends on your previous experience and interests.

Maybe you will visit schools and educate the pupils about environmental issues and agriculture. You could also plant various kinds of trees (like vegetable and fruit trees, herbal trees, and shadow trees). Possibly you will participate in farmer visits and training. Maybe you will participate in the making of vegetable gardens and tree nurseries. Or perhaps you will participate in environment cleaning by collecting of bottles and bags for planting vegetables or treating crops. You can also take part in caring for their dogs and cats. They also have a vet clinic, where you can learn a lot.

sobre la organización

Viva Tanzania is a German-Tanzanian organization established in order to support meaningful and needy projects in Arusha, North Tanzania.

Conoce a tu anfitrión(a)

Viva Tanzania was established in 2015 by Tizia Doriye due to her passion for intercultural encounters, tourism and nature. Tizia is a Cultural Anthropologist by profession. Together with our local team we want to make sure that you can make experiences abroad in a safe environment.

We want to assist people from all over the world and Tanzanians to learn from one another through intercultural exchange. By helping foreigners to find meaningful projects that need support we do not only want to enable them to gain experience in working and being with people from different origins but also broaden the horizonts of everyone. Our mission is to establish an environment in which intercultural encounter can take place. Our participants will be enabled to gain first hand experience in a totally different sourrounding from what they are knowing. We want to show them the diversity of people, cultures and lifestyles. On the other hand we want to support needy projects in Arusha, our hometown.

Our vision is to change the people's perception of Africa, Tanzania and its inhabitants through challenging and reducing stereotypes and racism. We believe that this can only be done through intercultural exchange like volunteering.

Tizia is the of Viva Tanzania. She has a Bachelor in Cultural Anthropology and she wrote her Bachelor thesis about Maasai stereotypes in media and tourism. She loves her three kids and three dogs as well as the life in Tanzania. She is responsible for the website, the marketing and the communication before, while and after your stay. She already spent a year as a volunteer in Tanzania and did an internship in Arusha. She is also a yoga teacher and a massage therapist. So she definitely knows what’s important to make your time unforgettable. At the same time she is your contact person for all intercultural issues and problems.
