Sobre el programa

The village of Bengkala in rural Bali is known for its inclusivity, where the deaf community (known as the Kolok) can develop their local sign language. It became one of the primary means of communications in the village, and the Kolok can integrate with hearing people in the community with little difficulty.

Embark on a community development journey by helping with basic life skill training and workshop sessions on topics such as household finances and waste management. Assist literacy workshops and help develop the creative economy, establishing a sustainable community-based tourism. You’ll get the chance to become part of a tight-knit community that not only embraces diversity, but also accommodates them. This is your opportunity to share knowledge and experience with people from completely different backgrounds, and learn the beauty of deaf culture that is often overlooked.

Día típico

Welcome to your program! On arrival, you will be picked up by a local staff/volunteer and taken to your accommodation to rest. You must have had a long journey, and you're best prepared for the orientation the next day!

You will undergo an orientation on your intercultural experience ahead. The orientation includes introduction of organization, managing hopes and concerns, basic Bahasa Indonesia, rules and regulations, and emergency procedures. You will also be briefed about your volunteering project by its staff. At the end of the day, you will depart to your project location and be transferred to your on-site accommodation.

On your first day, there will be an induction, and then the volunteering activities will commence. Guided by a dedicated facilitator who represents the local community, you will be assisting workshops on household financial management, basic waste management, and other skills that you may have. You may also be participating in their traditional weaving activity or any cultural and religious ceremonies that take place during your stay.

During your free time and weekends, you are free to explore the area and experience the local culture as you wish!

Every month, you will have a 1 to 2-hour session with fellow volunteers and staff to discuss your experience so far, and how to move forward with your current situation.

Before your departure home, you will have an end-of-stay orientation to reflect on your experiences and how it affects your perspective.

Actividades de tiempo libre

Your weekends are free to explore Bali. Spend time with Indonesian islanders, discover the local history and mythology in arts and souvenirs, and unwind at one of the sprawling beaches or rainforests.

Like most regional Indonesian cuisine, Balinese dishes are rich with spices. Bali is known for its sate lilit, or minced pork satay, although some may use chicken, beef or fish as an alternative.

It was very exciting and wonderful. For me, it was the first time to visit Indonesia and live in a rural area in Eastern Indonesia. But, I really loved the program because I can help and learn from the local farmers. And during my volunteering time, I also visited beautiful places near the project ...
I've always loved exploring the culture in Bali, so I thought I'd try something a bit different. Safe to say that it did not disappoint!
