Om programmet

As a Cambodia childcare volunteer with PMGY, you will educate and work with children between the ages of 4-7 years at a time before they begin formal schooling. International volunteers with children in Cambodia help to brighten up the lives of young children in Takeo Province. As a Cambodia childcare volunteer organise educational activities and games that will positively promote stimulation and productivity in young ones.

BACKGROUND TO THE CHILDCARE PROGRAM

The first few years of a child’s life are fundamentally important. This time is critical for forming the foundation that helps shape their future health, happiness and learning achievement. As a Cambodia childcare volunteer, you will have the opportunity to think and act creatively. As a consequence, you have the chance to make a positive impact on the lives of young ones within the local community.

Tourism in Cambodia contributes a tremendous amount to the economy. This means those who can converse in English with foreigners have far more prospects than those who do not. Exposure to the English language at a young age helps initiate the development of this life-long skill of multilingualism. Engagement with native English speakers, therefore, provides a great starting point for this. Our PMGY childcare project in Cambodia helps local children develop skills that they will benefit from for the rest of their lives. This includes an introduction to the fundamentals of the English language, assistance with social integration and the development of motor skills.

Each day as a childcare volunteer in Cambodia is different and you will get out of the project what you put in. It is a good idea to join the project with lots of ideas for activities so that you can get stuck in as soon as possible. Volunteers with children in Cambodia will have the opportunity to think and act creatively. As a consequence, they make a positive impact on the lives of young ones within the local community. If you need motivation for gap year volunteer programs, then our projects in Cambodia provide some fantastic opportunities.

CHILDCARE VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLE

Hope Daycare - Our main program in Cambodia is based in Takeo Province, south of the country’s capital city, Phnom Penh. The kids attending the childcare program are from villages nearby. The childcare centre is located on the same campus as our team’s teaching English program for older children and teenagers. It is hoped that the younger children will continue their journey with our team in the future. The childcare project, therefore, aims to also help with this eventual transition and integration.

The daycare program was founded in 2018. Based in a classroom setting, the project can have up to 50 children between the ages of 4 and 7 attend daily. The opportunity to learn, socialise with other children and improve their early years education has many children prepared to travel 7km daily to be at the project.

This responsible volunteering project focuses on developing core English skills and promoting social interaction and routines from a young age. As a volunteer with children in Cambodia, you will also lead many games and play activities in breaktimes outside of the classroom. There is plenty of open space at the project to enjoy ball games with the children and other outdoor activities.

Our international volunteers will be supported by daily itineraries set from the local staff. For volunteer work in Cambodia, there is an office of resources and textbooks that you can use to assist you. A volunteer with children in Cambodia is encouraged to introduce creative and engaging ways to manage the class.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER WORKING WITH CHILDREN IN CAMBODIA

Return Airport Transfer - Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. Our local team can help arrange onward transfers to the airport or an alternative destination from the volunteer accommodation. Making specific arrangements once in Cambodia provides more flexibility as plans can often change and participants may be on similar flight plans. The costs depend on your method of transport and your final destination. This can often be split across multiple participants if you are travelling with someone else on the program.

Accommodation Setup - Our Cambodia volunteer programs are based in a rural setting in Takeo Province, approximately two hours south of Phnom Penh. The accommodation is very basic, based in a remote location and a dormitory-like form. There is a sense of community in the program, with volunteers responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of the living area. This includes completing morning chores. This can involve tasks such as gardening, cleaning and renovation work. Together, this contribution from volunteers helps to maintain a happy and clean living environment for everyone.

High Impact Volunteer Location - Due to the more rural nature of this program we find the Cambodia volunteer programs to provide a more authentic and impactful experience. In general, volunteers feel they have a clearer role on how they can contribute to the local community and in turn feel more motivated to get involved everyday. This program is perfect for people looking to maximise their volunteer experience away from some of the more touristy distractions present in other destinations.

Placement Settings - PMGY does not provide volunteer opportunities in orphanages in any of our locations. Research and studies have shown that visiting and volunteering in orphanages has the potential to generate an industry that separates children from their families. In turn, putting children at increased risk of neglect and abuse. Therefore, we do not support these institutions with our volunteer network.

Instead, we focus on offering alternative childcare volunteer opportunities whereby children come to and from the placement setting each day. In other words, our local teams collaborate with childcare projects which do not offer any form of residential care. These are safe, responsible, and vetted projects, where participants continue to provide valued assistance supporting local staff.

Weekends - Your project work in Cambodia runs from Monday-Friday and weekends are free. You are welcome to relax and hang out at the volunteer accommodation but most participants will use this time to travel and explore the country. As a result, you can check out our Cambodia Weekend Travel Guide for top tips on how to spend your weekend.

Typisk dag

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL CHILDCARE DAY

On the childcare volunteer abroad program, you will be required to prepare, deliver and lead activities and basic English lessons to support local children. Volunteers with children in Cambodia can expect to spend 3-4 hours on the project each day. The typical hours of work as a Cambodia childcare volunteer are 1-4pm. Time on the Cambodia volunteer work will include various roles and tasks for the volunteers.

Days will usually begin with a lively and energetic first hour of songs, games, and basic hygiene tasks like teeth brushing. After burning off any excess energy, approximately 1 hour will be dedicated to learning. This may include activities such as learning and recognising the alphabet, understanding phonics, and coaching on basic greetings. Combined, these tasks help to familiarise the children with this foreign language. Furthermore, it advances their learning ability for other subjects in the future. The day will usually end with various activities that focus on practising fine motor skills and dexterity, perhaps through arts and crafts or group games.

Volunteers and coordinators have also introduced a Fun Friday aspect to the program. For this, fellow volunteers can come together to organise entertaining activities for the children. Sometimes volunteers will organise and fund an afternoon trip outside of the program for the children. Volunteers usually contribute a small expense to facilitate this, but contributing and participating in Fun Fridays are by no means compulsory.

When you volunteer in Cambodia, you should spend time planning for each day. This will allow them to get the most out of their project time. This also provides better learning activities for the children. As a Cambodia childcare volunteer, you will also have the opportunity to assist or lead an older class on our English Teaching project. However, this is optional and not a mandatory requirement of the program.

The project is located on the same grounds as the house for participants in our volunteering programs in Cambodia. Participants therefore only have a short walk to the project each day. Free time can be used to prepare sessions, chill in the Volunteer House, or explore the nearby villages.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Phnom Penh International Airport

You should arrive into Phnom Penh International Airport (airport code PNH) on the Monday. The airport pickup is available up until 7pm on the Monday.

On arrival a member of our local team, or an appointed driver, who will be at the airport waiting for you holding a name sign. They will drive you straight to Bakod village in Takeo Province, where our program is based. Upon arrival, you can relax and meet your fellow volunteers and some of the team members. The journey from the airport typically takes between 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Indkvartering

Volunteer House

On the Cambodia volunteer program, you will live on our Volunteer House. Our accommodation is based in the remote village of Bakod, around a 20 minute tuk-tuk ride from Takeo. In Takeo, you will find local restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs. Our main volunteer projects in Cambodia are based on the same site as the Volunteer House. You’ll be living and working with other international volunteers from around the world.

The volunteer accommodation is basic. Bedrooms usually conform to a single-sex dorm-style setup, with up to 12 people per room. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and bed linen. Bathrooms at the volunteer accommodation are communal. There is no hot water, however, this shouldn’t be a problem as Cambodia is hot and humid all year round! The bathrooms are separate from the volunteer bedrooms. Volunteers are advised to bring their own toiletries. This is because a lot of the products in Cambodia (for example shampoo and shower gel) have bleach in them. For this reason, it may be better to bring these kinds of products from back home.

There is Wi-Fi within the volunteer accommodation. Volunteers are recommended to purchase a local SIM card in-country to use with an unlocked mobile phone. There are several communal areas across the accommodation where volunteers in Cambodia can relax and socialise. This includes numerous hammocks and a swimming pool for volunteers to enjoy outside of the project.

There is also a small cafe just off-site of the accommodation. There is a local laundry service available, with a cost per person usually only a couple of dollars. Alternatively, hand-washing can be performed on-site in the volunteer accommodation. Each volunteer is provided with a trunk to place their items. These trunks can be locked, and volunteers should bring a small padlock for these. Alternatively, valuables can be stored with our local team in their private area. Volunteers are advised to note that cupboard space is not available within the dorm.

The Volunteer House is located on the same campus where our local coordinators live. Although volunteers have their own private space there is still the security of living next to our local team who can assist you if need be. It is also a great way to learn more about Cambodian culture and practise your new-found language skills! Most of our volunteer work in Cambodia is also based on the same grounds as the volunteer accommodation.

During our busiest months you may be placed at alternative accommodation. For instance, you could be placed in one of our secondary Volunteer Houses.

Mad og drikkevarer

Each day we will provide you with breakfast and dinner (Monday-Friday) at the accommodation which will be prepared by the cook – all cutlery and crockery etc is provided. For breakfast, you’ll be provided with toast, eggs, jam, noodles, coffee, tea. In the evening you will be provided with a traditional Cambodian dish with the odd western meal. Filtered drinking water is available free of charge for you to help yourself as you please.

You will need to purchase your own lunch. Volunteers are advised to budget around $3 each day for lunch. You will need to purchase your own lunch. Volunteers will usually head into town/the local market a couple times a week and stock up on lunch supplies such as noodles, pasta or snacks to bring back and store at the accommodation.

All meals at the weekend are at volunteers expense and not included in the Programme Fee. Volunteers will usually travel at the weekends anyhow.

Om projektet

Plan My Gap Year is an award-winning international volunteer placement organisation based in the UK.

Mød din vært

Plan My Gap Year is an award-winning international volunteer placement organisation based in the UK. We provide safe, affordable, need-driven volunteer programmes from 1 to 24 weeks in 11 countries worldwide.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US…

Founded by volunteers for volunteers, Plan My Gap Year works with local communities in the developing world towards long-term sustainable goals. We know there is no better way to travel and make a positive impact on the world.

We work extremely hard to ensure that our opportunities are affordable for everyone who wants to make a difference. So fees are 100% transparent, something our volunteers really appreciate.

Plan My Gap Year structured programmes create the perfect platform for you to see the world, meet like-minded people and engage in meaningful volunteer work. We have teams in the UK and in our host destinations who will support you 24/7 throughout your time with us. Furthermore, every project on our network is regularly risk-assessed by our UK team to ensure our set up is safe and that our volunteers are making a positive impact.

There is also a great social element to our programmes. Plan My Gap Year puts you in touch with all your fellow volunteers via Facebook before you set off. Our projects receive volunteers from around the world throughout the year, so even if you’re travelling solo, you’re going to meet heaps of people along the way. Plus you’ll have plenty of opportunity to travel the country with your newfound travel buddies – it’s all part of the PMGY experience!

So if you’re thinking of doing something a bit different on your next trip abroad, then why not drop us a line and find out what extraordinary things you could be doing.

AFFORDABLE & TRANSPARENT FEES

Our aim is to make our programmes accessible to motivated travellers irrespective of their financial capacity. Plan My Gap Year focuses on providing the core requirements of a volunteer programme: safety, structure and sustainability.

We are 100% transparent with our fees. That way you know exactly how much of your money goes towards the local community.

Compared to the large majority of volunteer organisations out there, even most charities and not-for-profits, PMGY’s opportunities are significantly cheaper. Furthermore, as our reviews will testify, our support service and structured programmes are second to none.

SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

Your safety is our top priority. All of Plan My Gap Years' programmes have been personally inspected and vetted by the PMGY team – which is not an industry standard by any means. We carry out independent risk assessments on an annual basis and our local teams constantly review the safety precautions we implement. This includes regular staff and safety appraisals.

Our local teams are made up of highly experienced volunteer coordinators. They have hosted international volunteers for many years and are prepared to react in the unlikely event of an emergency. Whatever the problem, big or small, our local teams are available around the clock.

As part of our commitment to your safety, we keep in constant communication with local embassies and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to ensure we can identify potentially dangerous situations and act upon them immediately. Our UK team are available 24/7 to assist volunteers and their families.

TRAINING & SUPPORT

We support our volunteers every step of the way. Before you go we will provide you with a detailed Volunteer Handbook, which will guide you through how to prepare for your trip. This Handbook contains literally everything you need to know – from what to pack, to how to obtain a visa, to local language guides.

Our experienced UK team are always available to provide assistance. Plan My Gap Year is always available to answer our questions and support you in anyway we can.

On arrival, a member of our in-country team will collect you from the airport and help you settle in. Your orientation course will teach you everything you need to know about the country, how to stay safe and what to expect from your upcoming volunteer experience.

Our local team are on-call 24/7. Whether you’ve lost your passport or just want some help in planning a weekend trip, our friendly in-country coordinators provide that safety net to ensure you are well looked after.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

Plan My Gap Years' responsibility is not limited to our travellers but also the projects we support. That is why all our volunteers must provide a Criminal Background Check before they travel.

It is essential that our projects are need-driven and sustainable. We work closely with our local partners to ensure that our volunteers are contributing to bring about long-term development.

PERSONAL TOUCH

We really know our programmes. Our UK team have stayed in the accommodation, volunteered at the projects and met the volunteers. We carefully assess each application we receive so that your personality and skills are suited to the project. Whatever your query, you can feel assured that you will be speaking to someone who can tell you exactly what to expect.

HAVING FUN

One of the best aspects of volunteering is meeting some amazing like-minded people. We place over 2,000 volunteers every year so wherever and whenever you go, you have the peace of mind in knowing you will be living and working alongside other PMGY volunteers. In many of our destinations, we run our own Volunteer House accommodation, which ensures all volunteers live together, and therefore guaranteeing a strong social element. In addition, our local team are always there to help you plan any independent travel or give you some tips for what to do at the weekend.
