The Budumburam refugee camp is the home of
the refugees of the Liberian civil war over 20 years ago. The people live in a
very deplorable condition. The place is a slum with a lot of filth which makes
the people fall sick a lot. A hospital has been built inside the amp to give
medical care to the people. The hospital has a lot of units and departments
including maternity, mental health, accident unit, laboratory, Ear Nose and
Throat (ENT) pediatrics, pharmacy, family health unit, etc. This placement is
for pre-medical and medical students as well as medical
professionals. Volunteers will shadow medical officers in various units
helping to take care of patient vitals, giving medications, and taking samples
for laboratory assessment. Volunteers are given a schedule to work, volunteers
rotate between the morning, afternoon, evening, and night shifts.
Volunteers also go on medical outreach to the
schools in and around the camp to give health education to the community.

closely with the hospital administration who will assign you to various
departments.
How Do I Get to the
Placement?
For the first day, volunteers
will be taken to the school. Our staff will show volunteers how to get to the
placement, the direction to take, the particular vehicle, and the amount to pay
for the transportation. This is repeated the next day if the volunteer thinks
he still can't make it until the volunteer can make his/her way. The same is
done for the return to the homestay after the work.
