Our Unique Opportunity

Simbonga Game Reserve & Warriors of Wildlife Sanctuary is home to not only our rescued big cats, but also an abundant amount of indigenous free roaming wildlife. We are approximately 154  hectares of natural vegetation that allows all of our animals an opportunity to live in a beautiful and safe home, and where volunteers and visitors can experience the serene beauty of Africa. With views of both the Indian Ocean and nearby mountain range, we believe this environment offers unique opportunities for each individual that comes to share our home with us.

One of Warriors of Wildlife's main purposes is to provide an educational experience where we teach all of our visitors about the plight of big cats in captivity as well as the challenges their wild cousins face. We pride ourselves on being a "true sanctuary" where no cub petting/hands on interaction, breeding, or trading/buying/selling of any kind of our animals takes place. All of our animals are rescued from terrible past lives, and we aim to provide the safe haven they have always deserved.

We aim to provide the best opportunity for you, where you will go home with your mind and heart open and an experience to share with your friends and family. Hearing a lion's roar each night,  being greeted by a tiger chuff in the morning, forming bonds with the animals, other volunteers, and staff, all while experiencing the beauty of South Africa.

Daily Tasks

Our volunteer program will offer you the opportunity to be involved behind the scenes each day with whatever may need assistance - daily tasks will include:

  • Cleaning and maintaining big cat enclosures or possibly assisting in the construction of new enclosures.
  • Creating enrichment items for our big cats.
  • Preparation of food/vitamins and assisting in feeding.
  • General reserve/farm work such as monitoring free roaming wildlife, alien plant removal, & road maintenance.
  • Assisting in guided educational tours through the Sanctuary.

You will work side by side with Sanctuary Managers, interns, and other volunteers.

What We Do

Our Project's primary focus is the day to day care of our Sanctuary residents; which currently comprises of 14 lions and 1 tiger.  You will quickly learn each of the animals' names and their individual stories of how they found peace at our Sanctuary after years of trials and tribulations that no living being should ever encounter. We are also permitted for rehabilitation and release of indigenous species. We have previously assisted in the successful rehabilitation of caracals, jackals, bats, genets, giraffe, baboons, and vervet monkeys of which came into our care due to being orphaned or injured. However, this experience is not guaranteed and only occurs on a need to basis and should not be expected.

Our organization is often called upon for rescue and relocation needs; ultimately meaning that things can change at the blink of an eye. When an animal needs our help, we do our absolute best to act quickly.

Tent Life

Volunteers get the chance to live in our glamping style safari tents that overlook the entire Reserve and are only a 5 minute walk or less from the Sanctuary. It's not uncommon for the free roaming wildlife such as giraffe or impala to walk straight past your tent. Each tent can accommodate 2-4 volunteers with a shared bathroom consisting of a shower, basin, and toilet. Each unit is equipped with a kitchenette with all basic needs to prepare your meals and a beautiful deck and bbq area where you can read a book with the sunrise, play card games with others, enjoy the warmth of a fire in the evenings, or a true South African Braai (bbq).

The Reserve is situated along the well known Garden Route of South Africa, and is only a quick 20 minute drive to well known hotspot Jeffreys Bay. This offers great opportunities to experience South Africa on days off where you can enjoy numerous different activities and recharge for the following week. Activities such as surfing/surf lessons, sky diving,  beach horse rides, shopping, whale watching, visits to nearby national parks, hiking, bungee jumping and more are all at your finger tips!

There is limited wifi connection on the Reserve, so it is HIGHLY advised for volunteers to obtain a South African SIM card on arrival where as you may upload data as required during your stay for connection.

It must be noted that due to the accommodation being in glamping style canvas safari tents, it may be helpful to bring along an extra blanket or hot water bottle during the winter months for added comfort. These items can also be purchased locally should you find it necessary during your stay.

Über die Organisation

Warriors of Wildlife is an organization that focuses on the rescue, relocation, and life long care of abused captive wildlife. Be a Warrior; be their voice.

Lerne deine Organisation kennen

Who are we?

  • Warriors of Wildlife (WoW) was initially started in 2014 as strictly a rescue-relocation organization for captive wildlife in need. These captive animals all being rescued from various backgrounds such as circuses, roadside zoos, as well as the pet trade and black market trade, it became obvious to our Team that there were thousands of captive animals in need, and finding them all ethical and species appropriate homes was becoming more challenging with each rescue. This then resulted in our establishing of our very own ethical Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.
  • At our Big Cat Sanctuary, our main purpose is to be a safe haven for the animals that come into our care for the rest of their lives. In addition, we strive to be an educational platform where we are able to raise awareness about all of the struggles that big cats face in a captive environment.
  • We are a true sanctuary, whereas we do NOT allow hands-on interaction with our animals, we do not allow breeding of any kind, and we do not allow any form of trading with our animals. They come to live with us for the rest of their lives in a natural, peaceful, and species appropriate environment.
  • Our Team is a small group of passionate and fierce animal advocates, of all different nationalities. From our full time team on site at our Sanctuary, as well as those facilitating all of the needs with each rescue we do, we are also so fortunate to have volunteers around the globe that assist in various ways, all of which changes at a fast pace to ensure we can rescue and successfully relocate the animals that come into our care as quickly as possible.

What do we do?

  • WoW focuses on the plight of captive big cats and other wildlife in need; the extraction of them from inappropriate environments; and the relocation of them to species appropriate, and ethical true sanctuaries. In addition, we have our own Sanctuary where we are able to ensure life long care for many of the rescue that come into our are.

Where do we work?

  • WoW works across the globe, with a current primary focus on Eastern Europe and South Africa.

Our mission?

  • We are a non profit dedicated to the rescue, relocation, and ongoing care of abused and neglected captive wildlife.

Our goals?

  • We aim to provide all physical and psychological needs for the animals that come into our care as well as the people that work alongside us.
  • We aim to treat all living creatures, animals and people alike, with respect.
  • We aim to be a valuable source of professional knowledge and high quality standards for wildlife in a captive setting.
  • We aim to provide accurate & educational information regarding the plight of big cats in captivity.
  • We strive to seek new ways to improve
WoW was born out of a genuine concern for the welfare of any wildlife kept in captivity and has tremendously grown since then. Today our number one goal is ensuring that all animals that come into our care are catered for based on their individual physiological and psychological needs. Their wellbeing is our number one priority as we try to give them the best quality of life possible while still taking into account past trauma and individual needs. Our core value is to serve wildlife and counterbalance the harm done to them in captivity to the best of our ability, to promote the respect of animals, and educate people on the tragic reality of captive wildlife as well as encouraging them to contribute to the effort to stop it.

We strive to keep growing by adapting to changing mentalities and taking WoW as far as possible while still respecting our residents needs. In the future we want to have a dynamic sanctuary that will expand and take care of smaller endemic species in need as well as the rehabilitation and re-wilding of indigenous species. We hope to participate in conservation projects that are linked to educating the local and international community as well as passing visitors. In doing so we aim to become a reliable source of knowledge for both the professionals in the field and the general public, and set a high quality standard of wildlife care in captive settings.

Who are we looking for?

  • We are looking for animal loving, passionate, flexible, and dedicated individuals to assist us in our day to day needs surrounding the animals that come into our care.

Why choose us?
  • If you want to be a part of a team that takes initiative and action to see a positive impact to all of those around us, then this is the project for you. We are one of the few ethical sanctuaries in our targeted area, and we believe that when others come together, great things happen. Join our Pride and make a difference for those without a voice.
