Sumatra Rainforest Institute is a Indonesian grass-roots organisation which focuses on the conservation of the Sumatran rainforest and its endangered species, rescuing wildlife in need as well as assisting local farmers to implement eco-friendly agricultural systems and technology in Northern Sumatra. SRI was established as an NGO in June 2000, becoming a collective organisation in 2002 and was legalised as an Institution in September 2007.  

The Sumatra Rainforest Institute's focus landscapes in Tapanuli Region are

• Batang Gadis National Park and Its bufferzone community forests - This National Park with 108,000 hectares is natural habitat of sumatran tiger
  
• The Dolok Sibual Forest Reserve and ts bufferzone community forests - This Nature reserve area with 5000 hectares is natural habitat of Orangutan
  
• Lubuk Raya Forest - This preserve area with 3000 hectares is natural habitat of Orangutan
  
• The Dolok Sipirok Forest Reserve - This preserve area 6,700 ha is natural habitat of sumatran orangutan
  
• The Batangtoru Forest- East & West Block - 180,0000 hectares
  
• The Angkola-Siondop Ecosystem - 87,000 hectares
  

One of Sumatra Rainforest Institute's programs is the Community Agroforestry Development Unit. This unit focuses on community development through agroforestry initiatives involving farmers who live around Batang Gadis National Park. It's projects provide the farmers with eco-friendly agriculture extension programs, conservation education and sustainable economic development solutions in North Sumatra. 

In conjunction with typical agroforestry outcomes, the Community Development Unit from Sumatra Rainforest Institute also aims to

• Improve rainforest conservation awareness among local communities
  
• Enhance the protection of wildlife and rainforest through reforestation projects and plant species enrichment plantings
  
• Decrease human-wildlife conflicts around important key biodiversity landscapes
  
• Improve management of rainforest and wildlife protection with real actions and participation of multi-stakeholders in and around Batang Gadis National Park
  
• Provide alternative income for small-scale farmers in order to decrease the unsustainable use of forest resources and illegal wildlife poaching
