Who are we?
The idea for SCE Apano Meria was born in 2015 through an open assembly of citizens of Syros and was finally established in 2017, with the aim of highlighting, protecting and preserving the Northern part of the island (Apano Meria). Project Juniperus is home to a number of different research and volunteer programs mainly focused on the protected area. The SCE created a research base that can host up to 9 young scientists and
volunteers who visit the island either to carry out their individual research or help us achieve our goals.
What do we do?
Our organization is working towards Environmental Education and Protection. As such we organize educational hikes, plastic recycling workshops and cultural events with the aim of informing and mobilizing the public to take an active stance towards protection. While the data available is scarce, fragmented and obsolete, this is exactly the information needed in order to effectively ensure protection. With this in mind, we apply citizen science methods to collect data and enrich the existing databases.
Where do we work?
We are located in Syros, among the Cyclades in the Aegean sea. Although the research base is in the port city of Ermoupolis, most of our field research is done ..well.. in the fields of the island and mainly on the northern part (Apano Meria). More than 45% of Syros is under protection of the european framework Natura 2000; two directives that protects both habitats and birds.
Who are we looking for?
The perfect candidate to come on board is a motivated, self-driven nature-loving individual! Although we are happy to teach you some of the necessary skills on board, some of our programs require a prior academic background. The most important things are that you are willing to live and work as a group, speak English and you are willing to help a common cause. If the answer to these questions is a yes, we're sure that you will be a good fit for our team!
